Developed by John Browning, the M1911 was used in the US military since 1911 to 1986 and saw action in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While it was replaced as the standard side arm by the 9mm Berretta M9, this pistol is so popular that it has not been completely phased out and is still in some use by units of the U.S. Army Special Forces and the U.S. Navy.
